Briar is a messaging app specifically designed to cater to the needs of activists, journalists, and individuals seeking a secure, user-friendly, and reliable mode of communication. Distinguishing itself from traditional messaging apps, Briar operates without relying on a central server; instead, messages are directly synchronized between users' devices. In times of Internet disruption, Briar can adapt by employing Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or memory cards to ensure uninterrupted information exchange during crises. Conversely, when an Internet connection is available, Briar utilizes the Tor network to offer enhanced privacy protection for users and their relationships.

Briar encompasses a wide range of features, including private messages, groups, forums, and blogs. The app is fortified with integrated support for the Tor network. All activities within the Briar app are stored exclusively on users' devices unless they choose to share information with others. Notably, Briar maintains a strict no-advertisement and no-tracking policy. The app's source code is proudly open for examination by all, having undergone rigorous professional auditing. Additionally, all Briar releases are reproducible, enabling users to verify that the published source code matches the app they have downloaded. Development of Briar is spearheaded by a dedicated non-profit team.
